As winter approaches, temperatures drop, the air becomes dry,and the temperature difference between day and night widens. The hydraulic system, transmission system, electrical control system, and mold components of color steel roll forming machines are all affected by the low-temperature environment. If maintenance is inadequate, issues such as increased hydraulic oil viscosity, poor lubrication, electrical condensation, mold rust, and increased shearing resistance can easily occur, thereby affecting forming precision and equipment lifespan. Therefore, conducting specialized winter maintenance is a crucial step in ensuring the stable operation of the machine and maintaining product quality.
Control Workshop Temperature to Avoid Cold Starts
Color steel roll forming machines should ideally be installed in well-ventilated,dry workshops with relatively stable temperatures. Before winter production,it is recommended to activate heating or insulation measures in advance to gradually raise the ambient temperature around the equipment, avoiding prolonged exposure to sub-zero environments. For overnight or holiday shutdowns, doors and windows should be closed to reduce cold air infiltration, preventing condensation or freezing in the hydraulic oil tank, pipelines, and electrical cabinets. If the workshop temperature remains consistently low,the preheating time should be appropriately extended before startup to allow the hydraulic system, motor, and transmission components to gradually reach their normal operating state.
Ensure Proper Preheating;Strictly Prohibit Full-Load Operation in Cold Conditions
Low winter temperatures degrade the fluidity of lubricating oils and hydraulic oil.Direct full-load production can increase the load on the hydraulic pump, accelerate the wear of transmission components, and even cause abnormal noise. Before formal production, power on the machine and run it without load for 10 to 20 minutes, observing whether the hydraulic pump station, motor, chains, and rollers operate smoothly.Only after the oil temperature rises, the pressure stabilizes, and the equipment sounds normal should feeding and production begin. If the equipment is restarted after a prolonged shutdown,a no-load test run must be conducted first to confirm there is no jamming or abnormal vibration before resuming formal operations.
Use Low-Temperature Hydraulic Oil to Maintain System Stability
The hydraulic system is the core of the shearing and forming process. In winter, select an appropriate low-temperature hydraulic oil based on the local minimum temperature, and avoid using old oil with excessively high viscosity or emulsification.High viscosity can lead to oil pump suction difficulties and sluggish shearing actions, while low viscosity may compromise sealing and pressure stability.Regularly check the oil tank level;if the oil appears cloudy, discolored,or contains impurities, replace it promptly. Also, inspect hydraulic pipelines, connectors, and cylinders to prevent low temperatures from hardening seals and causing leaks.
Optimize Lubrication to Prevent Grease Solidification
Winter lubrication requires special attention to the low-temperature adaptability of the grease.Moving parts such as chains, gears, bearing seats, guide rails, and shearing slides need regular application of lubricating oil or low-temperature grease. For precision sliding parts like guide rails and slides, avoid using overly thick butter/grease in severe cold,as it may solidify and affect sliding precision and feeding stability.Follow the equipment manual to select lubricants with better fluidity and apply them in scheduled, measured amounts. Before lubricating, clean away iron filings, dust, and old grease to prevent impurities from entering the friction pairs and causing wear.
Strengthen Rust Prevention for Molds and Rollers
The rollers and upper/lower molds directly contact the color steel sheets, and their surface condition directly affects the product's appearance.Due to significant humidity fluctuations in winter, residual moisture, oil,or metal debris on the mold surface after shutdown can easily cause rust. Before each shutdown, clean dust, iron filings, and sheet debris from the rollers and molds, and apply a thin layer of anti-rust oil to non-working surfaces. For long-term storage, thoroughly wipe the molds clean and apply rust-prevention treatment to prevent rust marks from scratching the sheets upon restart.
Protect Electrical Systems from Moisture,Dust, and Freezing
Winter electrical failures are often related to condensation, dust, and loose wiring.Regularly inspect the electrical control cabinet, motor junction boxes, sensors, encoders, and limit switches to ensure doors seal well and the interiors are free of dust and moisture.Place desiccants inside the cabinet or use heating/dehumidifying devices to prevent short circuits caused by condensation in low-temperature,high-humidity environments.Outdoor cables and plugs must be protected against water and freezing;clear snow and ice from electrical equipment promptly after snowfall.Address loose terminals, aged cable jackets,or damaged insulation immediately to prevent poor contact or leakage.
Inspect Air and Cooling Water Systems to Prevent Freezing Blockages
If the machine is equipped with pneumatic components, cooling systems,or water-cooling devices, check for accumulated water during winter.Moisture in compressed air can easily freeze in filters, air tanks, and pipeline low points, causing malfunction.Drain air line condensate daily and purge residual water before shutdown. For water-cooling systems, drain pipeline water during prolonged shutdowns and use compressed air to blow out residual liquid if necessary to prevent freezing and cracking of pipes, valves,or radiators. If antifreeze is used, regularly check its concentration and freezing point as instructed.
Regularly Inspect Fasteners,Transmission Parts, and Shearing Mechanisms
In low-temperature environments, equipment vibration may loosen bolts, nuts, and set screws.During winter maintenance, focus on inspecting frame bolts, roller fasteners, chain tensioners, shearing knife seats, and guide rail clamps, tightening them promptly if loose.Chains and gears should maintain proper tension;too loose can cause skipping, while too tight increases transmission load. Also, check the condition and clearance of shearing blades to avoid increased shearing resistance due to insufficient lubrication, which can cause burrs or incomplete cuts.
Standardize Long-Term Storage to Reduce Failure Risks
If winter orders decrease or the equipment requires long-term shutdown, standard storage procedures must be followed.Thoroughly clean the equipment, cut off the main power, drain easily frozen media, and apply anti-freeze treatments to the hydraulic, air, and water systems.Apply anti-rust oil to metal surfaces like rollers, molds, and guide rails, and seal the electrical cabinet against moisture.During long-term storage, run the equipment without load for short periods periodically to prevent bearings, cylinders, and transmission parts from seizing. Before reactivation, recheck oil levels, lubrication, electrical insulation, and hydraulic pressure to confirm normal operation before production.
Establish a Winter Inspection System to Enhance Equipment Stability
Winter maintenance should not be limited to temporary fixes but should form a fixed inspection mechanism. It is recommended to check hydraulic oil levels, oil temperature, pressure, chain lubrication, and electrical cabinet status daily;inspect fasteners, guide rail clearances, blade conditions, and air line drainage weekly;and conduct comprehensive checks on hydraulic filters, transmission systems, and key electrical components monthly.Through standardized winter maintenance,low-temperature failures can be reduced, and the lifespan of the color steel roll forming machine can be extended, helping overseas customers maintain stable production efficiency and forming quality in cold climates.
